Sergiy Vakarin demonstrated new space technologies during the Space Week in Ukraine

UkraineIS held several events within the framework of the Odyssey Foundation’s Space Week in Ukraine.

At the opening of the Space Week in Kyiv’s iHUB on April 11, Sergiy Vakarin and Alex Planida demonstrated SecureIO  projects (Augmented reality and Cyber​security) that were already featured in EU countries. One of them is the AR-based 3d control of the airborne and space objects on the screen, such as a plane, a satellite or a spacecraft. This makes it possible, for example, for a smooth 3d control of the space shuttle docking to the ISS without rising from the chair (for an astronaut, this can be the key advantage).

Recent reports about possible use of VR and related tech (such as TENZR gesture control system) to train NASA’s future astronauts triggered the SecureIO’s VR/AR team to develop a solution for gesture control of air/space missions.

Google’s Soli, the radar-based technology seems to solve most difficult problems of gesture recognition like tracking of the crossing fingers. So Sergiy Vakarin developed a concept for synergy of radar technologies for different uses. First, it sounded dubious but now it seems almost trivial: why not use the radar tech twice. To a point, orbits of the sky or space objects intersect in a similar way to the crossing fingers. So, if one radar sensor is busy dealing with them while another is on its duty to recognize hand motion, a synergy of matching their signals may improve efficiency of gesture control of these objects.

How can this be used? Training of air traffic controllers and astronauts is one area. But there is more to it. In a real-life setting, 3d gesture control could also improve efficiency of air traffic controllers and others who use radars.

And even though in space flights, e.g. of shuttles to and from the International Space Station, most of the mission control functions are automated, some procedures are still manual, and in any case the commander has an option for manually docking the spacecraft. The astronauts undergo substantial training on how to use manual controls for such docking in case anything goes wrong with the automatic system. They are locked in their seats so gesture control with 3d function could help them in this task.

Space exhibition at the opening of the Space Week included a collection of meteorite debris, which was exhibited by Artem Shevel (paleo.ua).

It is amazing that next day after Sergiy Vakarin’s warning about the importance of space security in the context of the Space Week and the Future Fest Ukraine, telescopes showed the asteroid approaching to the Earth. And on April 15, the Earth nearly missed a collision with this Tunguska meteorite-sized asteroid. 110 years ago the Tunguska meteorite destroyed ​​over 2000 sq. km of Siberian forest. This is the area of ​​ a city like Moscow, or a state such as Luxemburg. The asteroid, 6 times larger than the Chelyabinsk meteorite, has flown just between the Earth and the Moon.
